Things to do in Kampala

by Marin Ritmeijer

Some people say that if you have not visited the capital, then you have not visited the country. This is the case for Kampala - the economic, political and social hub of the country. Kampala might not be as pretty as Rome (although they like to make the comparison with the seven hills), but it is among the nicest cities in Africa: green hills, stunning views, a thriving dining and clubbing scene, and a pleasant friendly vibe among the locals. Here is a list we have come up with:

  • Swimming at Kabira Club - Bukoto (Ush 35,000), Speke Resort - Munyonyo (Ush 30,000), or Royal Suites – Bugolobi (Ush 10,000);
  • Golf at Uganda Golf Club – Nakasero.  Occupying a ridiculously large part of Kampala, but worth it;
  • Rent a Laser or windsurf equipment at Victoria Nyanza Sailing Club and sail  Lake Victoria;
  • Explore Kampala on the back of a motorbike taxi with Walter’s BodaBoda Tours and learn about Kampala’s history, culture, important monuments, and scenic places. It is lots of fun! Tel: 0791880106
  • Visit Ghadaffi Mosque located on Old Kampala Hill, the oldest part of the city
  • Visit the Baháí Temple, spiritual home for people of all faiths, neatly set in a beautiful garden atop Kikaya Hill, opposite Bukoto area across the Northern Bypass
  • Enjoy traditional dances and food at Ndere Centre, Ntinda.  (Wednesday, Friday and Sunday) Highly recommended!
  • Scavenge for an outfit amongst the largest second-hand clothing market  in Sub-Saharan Africa: Owino Market.
  • Cross Murchison Bay to the opposite peninsula by small motorboat (15 minutes) departing from Ggaba port or Munyonyo Marina and enjoy offshore Kampala; a completely different environment- unspoilt forest, sandy beaches, serene. Great for walking and mountain biking. Swim and dine at stunning Lagoon Resort.

Kampala has a very nice international dining scene. Our favourite restaurants include:

  • Several bistros and bars at Kisementi square / Bukoto street
  • Khana Khazana – Acacia avenue and Tank Hill Muyenga (Indian)
  • Il Patio – Mayfair Casino, Kisozi Close off Nakasero lane (Italian)
  • Mediterraneo Restaurant - Acacia Avenue (Italian)
  • Le Chateau- Ggaba road (Belgian)
  • Yujo Restaurant – Kyadondo Road, Nakasero (Japanese)
