World class hiking & trekking in the Rwenzori Mountains

by Marin Ritmeijer

Did you know Uganda is great for hiking and mountain climbing? Arguably the best place for trekking are the Ruwenzori Mountains - also called the Mountains Of the Moon - the highest mountain range in Africa.

The peaks of the Rwenzoris, Margherita (5,109m) and Alexandra (5,083m) on Mount Stanley are exceeded in altitude in Africa only by Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. Hikers rate the distinctive glacial peaks as the most challenging of all African mountains. Moreover, the Rwenzoris are popular for their varied and distinct vegetation, whilst remaining largely untouched by tourist groups. Climbing the peaks is best done in the driest months of December – February and June – August. The trailhead starts at Kilembe, but accommodation options are also available in nearby Kasese town. Rwenzori Trekking Services offers a variety of mountain treks using a combination of trails.
