Best campsites and lodges in Madagascar
Based on the experience of our own and those of other road trippers, see an overview of our favorite campsites & lodges in Madagascar so that you can book the accommodation yourself. Although some lodges have a website, many respond poorly to emails. Better to call and/or just show up on time.
We strongly recommend that you start and/or end your roadtrip from Ivato, which is close to the airport and our office. Antananarivo is highly congested with mostly one-way streets, and it will be a nightmare to try to find your hotel in your rental car. Better to visit Tana as a day trip from Ivato by taxi, or take a taxi from the airport to your hotel in Tana. We don't offer car deliveries to Antananarivo.
When looking for a campsite or budget guesthouse, we highly recommend using the free app iOverlander. Basically, every campsite is plotted and reviewed. Public campsites in the national parks do not require any advance arrangements and can't even be booked in advance. You'll arrange your camping permit on arrival at the gate.
Accommodation is dirt cheap in Madagascar and, if you book mid-range and upwards, of good quality. Note that breakfast is mostly not included in the room price and is charged separately.
The lodges in this section are categorized according to pricing on the basis of a double room.
- Budget - € is up to around €30 per room;
- Mid-Range - €€ is up to around €60 per room;
- Deluxe - €€€ is unlikely to cost more than €125 per room.
