How to get to Zanzibar

Heading to Zanzibar after your safari? Great choice. This tropical island is just a hop away from the mainland and makes the perfect end to your Tanzania adventure. Whether you fly, ferry, or sail – here’s how to get there.

Getting to Zanzibar from the mainland

Zanzibar is closer than you think – just off the coast from Dar es Salaam. You’ve got several great options to get there:

  • Domestic flights
The fastest and most convenient way. Fly directly to Zanzibar with Air Tanzania, Precision Air, Coastal Aviation, Regional Air, or Air Excel. Flights are short and can be easily booked online.

  • Ferry from Dar es Salaam
Daily ferries leave from Sokoine Drive and take about 2.5 hours. Tickets cost around $40. Check Azam Marine or Fast Ferries for up-to-date schedules and bookings.

  • Private speedboat from the mainland
Staying near Pangani or Ushongo Bay? Many beach lodges offer private transfers to Kendwa Beach in northern Zanzibar. Expect to pay around $220 per boat one way. Travel time: about 1.5 hours.

  • Sail like a local
Feeling adventurous? Hop on a traditional dhow from Bagamoyo for just $2. It’s a unique experience, but safety and comfort are very basic – consider this option only if you’re truly up for a rustic ride.
