Spec sheet: Toyota Land Cruiser Troopy

The classic Land Cruiser Troopy model is the perfect vehicle for game drives with family or a group of friends. Its rooftop can be lifted, providing a full 360-degree view—no wildlife will go unnoticed! This model comes with six window seats. When travelling with one of our local drivers, your group can include up to five people.

If you plan to go camping in Tanzania, we recommend renting our Land Cruiser Double Cab instead. The pop-up roof of the Land Cruiser Troopy is not compatible with a rooftop tent. If you do like to take the Land Cruiser on a camping safari, it's best to rent it with a ground tent and camp gear. In this setup, we remove the last row of seats to create additional storage space, as the Troopy’s boot is small. This reduces the seating capacity from six to four people.

Toyota Land Cruiser Troopy specifications

Kindly note that while we ensure that our Land Cruisers are well-maintained, they are not new. You will not find a new Land Cruiser for hire in Tanzania. The classic Land Cruisers you see on the roads in Tanzania can be twenty years old, but don't let this fool you. It's for a good reason - they are extremely powerful and reliable, and built without electronics for slower travel in the bush. Keep in mind that the driving comfort on paved roads, as well as features like air conditioning and speaker quality, cannot be compared to modern cars.

  • Model: Toyota Land Cruiser Troopy 75/78.
  • Capacity: Six seats. So, if you travel with a driver-guide, your own travel group can be a maximum of five persons. When travelling with camping gear, the car can seat a total of four people.
  • Gearbox: Manual.
  • Engine: 1hz 6-cylinder engine.
  • Tank capacity: 2 x 80 litres.
  • Fuel: Diesel.
  • Fuel consumption: 7-8 km/l.
  • 4-Wheel Drive: All vehicles have 4WD, but the method for engaging it can vary by vehicle. How to engage the 4WD is explained in the practical information booklet that comes with your vehicle.
  • Spare tyres: 2.
  • Tyre pressure: depending on the number of people and load, 30 PSI in the front and 35 PSI in the back. You don’t need to do anything further with this. The tyre pressure is well-adjusted.

The interior and tools

  • Pop-up roof: Yes.
  • Roof hatch: Yes, there is one above the front and one above the back row seat. The front roof hatch can still be used when one rooftop tent is mounted.
  • Inverter: Yes, allowing you to charge your devices in the car.
  • Dual battery (for fridge): No. Without a dual battery, the fridge only works when the engine is running.
  • Water tank: No.
  • A/C: No. The reason is that the A/C can get blocked easily due to the bumpy and dusty road, and it's very challenging to fix this in the bush. Drive with your windows open.
  • Audio: Radio with small speakers, a USB, and an audio port. Bring your own audio cable (mini jack) to play music from your phone.
  • Boot: The boot is small. We advise packing your luggage in soft duffel bags as they pack more easily than suitcases. If your travel group is six, you will store some bags between the seats inside the car.
  • Tools: Wheel spanner, towing rope, jumper cables, high-lift jack, shovel, fire extinguisher, reflector triangles, and first aid kit.
  • Extras: Roadmap and Driving in Tanzania manual. Roadtrippers who book a tour receive a planned route with driving directions and tips along the way.
