Our story & values
Roadtrip Africa started with a simple question: why isn’t it easier to explore East Africa independently?
Back in 2011, founders Okke and Laura were living in Kampala. Friends and family would often fly over to visit. They all had the same wish: to explore Uganda freely, at a good rate, without joining a group tour.
But that option didn’t really exist. No company offered reliable 4x4 cars for self-driving with camp gear and route planning assistance.
So, an idea was born. An idea to create a company that would help travellers discover the magic of Africa on their own terms. We've come a long way since then, expanding our services to Tanzania, Kenya, and Madagascar, and opening local offices in Kampala, Arusha, Nairobi, and Ivato.
Today, we're proud to still be the market leader in the self-drive industry in East Africa, with an ever-growing fleet of reliable 4x4 cars and a loyal community of (returning) roadtrippers from all over the world.
Personal and local
We are still family-owned, and we like it that way. It keeps things personal and direct. When you contact us, you deal with our team. Not a call centre far away.
Our team is a mix of Dutch, Ugandan, Kenyan, Tanzanian and Malagasy colleagues. Many have been with us since the early days. Step by step, our African offices have become locally managed and co-owned by the local people who helped build them. That’s something we truly value.
We believe this combination of Dutch accuracy and reliability, hands-on knowledge of the country and contagious joy for life is what sets us apart from other car rental and tour operator companies.
