Eastern Madagascar
This region is covered in our Tropical Extension itinerary and offers a lush contrast to the dry south. The RN2 takes you from Antananarivo to Tamatave (Toamasina), Madagascar’s main port on the east coast. It’s a scenic route with plenty of highlights along the way.
Don't miss:
- The tropical rainforest of Andasibe, home to Madagascar’s largest lemur, the Indri.
- A stay at one of the peaceful Canal de Pangalanes river resorts - perfect for slowing down.
- Mahambo, a relaxed beach town and the departure point for the passenger ferry to Île Sainte-Marie. You’ll find a handful of basic and mid-range places to stay here.
We’ve listed some of our favourite stays along this route in the sections below.
