The RN7

Route Nationale 7 (RN7) is Madagascar’s classic road trip route - stretching from Antananarivo all the way south to Tulear. It’s a scenic journey through highlands, national parks, and rural villages, with plenty of great places to stop along the way.

We’ve listed our favourite stays below, from charming guesthouses to comfortable lodges.

Continuing west?
If you're heading into the Grand Circuit along the west coast, your pisteur (local guide/driver) will meet you in Tulear or Ifaty. Please note: they cannot meet you in St. Augustin or other west coast villages since there’s no public transport in that region.

Where to stay in Antsirabe

Antsirabe is likely the second major stop on your RN7 journey, known for its cool climate, colonial buildings, and quirky rickshaws. If you’ve got time, take a ride through town, cycle to Lac Tritriva, or enjoy a short hike around the crater lake.

Where to stay in Ranomafana

Branching off the RN7 onto the RN45 takes you deep into rainforest country. Ranomafana National Park is known for its steamy jungles, waterfalls, and rare lemurs.

We recommend spending two nights here; enough time for a full day of hiking in the park and a guided night walk along the forest edge to spot nocturnal wildlife.

Where to stay in Fianarantsoa

Often called Fianar, this hillside town is a good stopover - especially if you’re skipping Ranomafana or prefer to travel at a slower pace.

The old town has real charm, with cobbled streets, historic buildings, and sweeping views. You can explore on your own or book a local guide to learn more about the area’s rich cultural and religious history.

Where to stay in Ambalavao & the Tsaranoro Region

This stretch of your journey offers two great options, depending on your pace and plans.

If you're just staying one night or ready to take a break from driving, Ambalavao is a convenient and comfortable stop. You’ll find lovely views, easy access, and tours organised through Betsileo Country Lodge - check their website for options.

If you’ve got more time (and energy), we recommend heading 1.5 hours off-road into the stunning Tsaranoro Valley. This area is perfect for hiking, climbing, and enjoying jaw-dropping landscapes.

All listed accommodations offer designated camping spots. Betsileo Country Lodge even has dedicated sites designed especially for rooftop tent travellers.
