Western Madagascar
This section of your road trip follows our Western Route - a journey that combines highland views, river valleys, and remote coastal charm.
You’ll start on the RN7 toward Antsirabe, then branch off onto the RN34 and RN35 through Miandrivazo, before reaching the laid-back beach town of Morondava.
From Morondava, you’re based perfectly to explore some of Madagascar’s most iconic sights: the Avenue of the Baobabs, Kirindy Reserve, and the rugged wonder of Tsingy de Bemaraha.
Where to stay in Miandrivazo
Miandrivazo is a stopover town on the way to western Madagascar. While it’s not a destination in itself, it makes for a comfortable overnight break - and has a couple of surprisingly nice hotels, both with a swimming pool.
In the late afternoon, stretch your legs with a stroll through town or join a sunset boat tour on the Tsiribihina River. A peaceful way to end the day.

Where to stay in Morondava
Morondava is the main hub of Madagascar’s west coast - and the ideal base for visiting Avenue of the Baobabs, exploring Kirindy Reserve, or continuing your journey north to Tsingy de Bemaraha.
The town itself is laid-back, with a few good beaches just south of the centre. That said, if you're after a true beach holiday, you're better off heading further up the west coast or to the north of Madagascar.

Where to stay in Kirindy Reserve
Kirindy is your best chance to spot Madagascar’s elusive fossa. But fair warning: sightings are rare, and more often than not, it’s the local cats and dogs that sneak into view!
That said, Kirindy Reserve is still a rewarding stop for its dry forest, baobabs, and night walks. It’s also conveniently located about halfway between Morondava and Tsingy de Bemaraha, making it the perfect overnight break on what would otherwise be a 10-hour drive.

Where to stay in Tsingy de Bemaraha (Bekopaka)
This is the main reason most travellers venture to Western Madagascar: the Tsingy de Bemaraha! These dramatic limestone pinnacles are unlike anything else on the island (or the planet). We recommend staying three nights in Bekopaka, the base village to explore the park.
-
Day 1: Hike the Big Tsingy, a 4 to 6-hour guided trek through narrow canyons, rope bridges, and stunning viewpoints.
-
Day 2: Visit the Small Tsingy, take a boat trip along the Tsiribihina River, and enjoy some well-earned rest at your lodge before heading back to Morondava.
