Land Cruiser Troopy car specifications

Please note that while our vehicles are well-maintained, they are not new. Features such as the audio system or A/C are not comparable to what you are used to in cars back home or in Southern Africa, where roads are smoother and rental vehicles are typically newer.

New Land Cruisers are not available for hire in Kenya. The classic Land Cruisers you see on safari can be up to twenty years old, but they are extremely powerful and reliable. With simple electronics and a robust design, these vehicles are made for lower travel on rough roads in the bush.

  • Model: Toyota Land Cruiser Hardtop 75/78.
  • Capacity: Six seats. So if you travel with a driver-guide, your own travel group can be five people maximum. When travelling with camp gear, the car can accommodate a maximum of four persons in total.
  • Gearbox: Manual.
  • Engine: 1HZ 6-cylinder engine.
  • Tank capacity: 2 x 80 litres.
  • Fuel: Diesel.
  • Fuel consumption: 7-8 km /L.
  • 4-Wheel Drive: All the vehicles have 4WD. How to engage the 4WD is explained in the practical information booklet in your vehicle.
  • Spare tyres: 2.
  • Tyre pressure: Depending on the number of people and load, 40 PSI in the front and 45 PSI in the back. You don’t need to do anything further with this. The tyre pressure is well-adjusted. On the road, check the tyre pressure when refuelling.
  • Speed restriction: Traffic police in Kenya are very strict about speed limits. To comply with the law, our Land Cruisers are restricted to 80 km/h.

The interior and tools

  • Pop-up roof: Yes. The pop-up roof can't be used when a rooftop tent is mounted.
  • Inverter: Yes, with socket and USB ports (type A).
  • Dual battery (for fridge): No. Without a dual battery, the fridge only works when the engine is running.
  • Water tank: No.
  • A/C: No. The reason is that the A/C can get blocked easily due to the bumpy and dusty road, and it's very challenging to fix this in the bush. Drive with your windows open.
  • Audio: Radio with USB and audio port. Bring your own audio cable (mini jack) to play music from your phone.
  • Boot/canopy: The boot is small. We recommend packing your luggage in soft duffel bags, as they are easier to handle than suitcases. If your travel group is six, you will store some bags between the seats inside the car.
  • Rooftop tent: This vehicle can support two rooftop tents.
  • Tools: Wheel spanner, spade, towing rope, jumper cables, high-lift jack.
  • Extra's: Roadmap, Roadtrip Kenya practical information manual.
