Renting a car with driver-guide on safari - what to expect

Roadtrip Africa works with truly lovable and experienced driver-guides. You can expect from your driver in Tanzania that he will get you to your destination safely and is responsible for the car's condition. He will do game drives in the safari parks and he knows the best places to go for a lunch break or stocking up supplies. He can also help you fine-tune your itinerary along the way and recommend activities, campsites and lodges.  Yet, you remain in charge of your own holiday and itinerary. The driver-guide is there to facilitate and ease your travels.

Our driver guides are also keen to share their knowledge of Tanzania, so ask him anything, and you return home with a deeper understanding of the country and a new friend.

All the drivers we work with are fluent in English.

If you're taking a driver with you into the national parks, the Tanzania National Parks Authority requires you to have your entrance permits paid in advance, so you won’t be able to just decide on the fly. If you book a car with a driver, Roadtrip Africa will help arrange the required park entrance permits for you in advance.

What are the costs to hire a driver for my trip in Tanzania?

The cost of hiring a driver-guide for your Tanzania trip is € 40/day and all the proceeds go to the driver. This fee also covers his meals and accommodation. You don't need to arrange accommodation for him, as the lodges have facilities for the driver-guides where they can eat and sleep for a reduced rate. He is happy to sort out himself.

If you go on a camping trip in Tanzania, we also supply your driver with camping gear. As there are no facilities to eat elsewhere inside the national parks, we appreciate you taking into account an extra person when buying groceries, and cooking your meals together. Most drivers are pretty good bush cooks and know how to start a campfire.

When you travel into a national park with a driver, you do have to pay their entrance fee of €2 - €5/day, depending on the park.

Note that fuel remains your own expense. Your Tanzania rental car is delivered with a full tank and you return it with a full tank.
